Spring Charity Highlight
Spring is in full swing, so get out and enjoy the weather! We have some info about Spring Quarter's charities for you to enjoy as well. Our spotlight charity of the quarter is the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center, our Human Rights charity. The Center's Development Director, Sandy Harnick, was kind enough to sit down with us for a quick interview. Read on to see what she has to say. As always, more information on our donation process can be found in our Donation FAQ!

HUMAN RIGHTS

Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center - Pembroke Pines, FL
http://www.susanbanthonycenter.org/

1. What are the Vision and Mission of the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center?

Our Vision Statement: Empowering recovering women with children to create a foundation of interdependence to live stable and productive lives with their families.

Our Mission Statement: The Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center transforms families by providing help, hope and healing for mothers and their children to live responsible drug-free lives.

2. What geographical reach does the Center have?

While our center serves the entire state of Florida, our focus is Broward County.

3. What inspired you to start the organization?

After spending years as the administrator for Foster & Adoptions in Broward County, I realized that all the children desperately wanted to be home with their mom. Sadly almost all of them were there because their mothers were involved with drugs or alcohol. I knew, after looking in the eyes of these children day after day, that I needed to provide a service that would help give these children back a healthy mom and a life that is free of abuse or neglect.

4. Is there a particular success story that stands out in your mind?

Susan's Story

"Throughout my life, I have dealt with the issue of substance abuse. In December of 2006, I hit rock bottom! I was physically, emotionally, and spiritually bankrupt! I had nothing left, except the possibility of 5 years of prison. By the grace of God an advocate from a substance abuse facility informed me that there was an alternative to prison. I could get the help that I so desperately needed by going into treatment and that I would be able to have my baby and reconcile with my other children. At that point, I was sentenced by the Department of Corrections to a substance abuse treatment facility. Substance abuse treatment saved by life and helped me to break the cycle of substance abuse in my family. In December of 2007, I reunited with my five children at the Susan B. Anthony annual Christmas party. I am so grateful to God, my therapists and to the Susan B. Anthony Center for helping me to realize that I am an incredible woman."

Today, Susan is a successful graduate of the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center; a graduate of Broward College with an AA degree in December 2008; enrolled in FAU's school of Social Work working toward her BA degree; recently married; and just employed by our Center to help save other families like hers. She is most proud of her new life and what she has accomplished, but she states that "most importantly I am a mother to my five children and a productive member of society".

5. Where will the donated money go?

The funds received from Brown Paper Tickets will go directly to the program "stop the cycle" which provides for the children's housing, which is not covered by any outside funding.

ANIMALS

Buffalo Field Campaign - West Yellowstone, MT
http://www.buffalofieldcampaign.org/

From their website:

The Buffalo Field Campaign (BFC) is the only group working in the field, every day, to stop the slaughter and harassment of Yellowstone's wild buffalo. Volunteers from around the world defend buffalo on their traditional winter habitat and advocate for their protection. Volunteers spend all day, from sunrise until sunset, watching and documenting actions taken against the buffalo. We run patrols from cars, skis and snowshoes to protect buffalo outside the park. Tactics range from video documentation to nonviolent civil disobedience. BFC enjoys incredible support and participation from the local community. Residents allow us to post signs on their property designating them as "Buffalo Safe Zones". We offer a fence repair service to mitigate damage caused by wildlife. Locals join us on our daily rounds, and many support our patrols with hot drinks and food.

CHILDREN

Raising the Blues - Melrose, MA
http://www.raisingtheblues.org/

From their website:

Raising The Blues, Ltd. is a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization dedicated to bringing music to children undergoing medical treatment or recovery, and children with physical, emotional or educational challenges. Primarily through the use of Blues music, we seek to raise the spirits, abilities and aspirations of children who can benefit from musical enrichment and interactive musical opportunities. Our musicians and volunteers bring musical performances, interactive musical opportunities and musical training to children in hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, schools and special education settings or other appropriate venues.

ENVIRONMENT

Wetlands Initiative - Chicago, IL
http://wetlands-initiative.org/

From their website:

The Wetlands Initiative is a nonprofit corporation. We envision the Illinois River Valley and other Midwest floodplain areas as ecological and economic models for wetland restoration nationwide. We believe that high-quality wetlands restored on floodplains can provide a solution to systemic water-quality problems while reducing flood damage, enhancing biodiversity and wildlife habitat and creating recreational opportunities. We foresee policymakers and ecosystem managers throughout the country adopting strategies, such as nutrient farming, that provide financial incentives for reducing contaminants in our nation's waterways and coastal estuaries. We also foresee the development of programs that provide financial encouragement for private landowners to participate in wetland restoration.
