Brian Copeland's show reveals a little-known chapter of Bay Area history. In 1971, San Leandro was named one of the most racist suburbs in America. Congressional hearings were held. The next year, the then eight-year-old Brian Copeland and his African-American family moved to San Leandro. In a monologue that's both funny and poignant, Brian explores how surroundings make us who we are.
GENUINE has just completed a successful run at the Hayworth Theater in Los Angeles. During the same period, Copeland also continued performing the show Thursday nights in San Francisco, making GENUINE the first solo show to run in L.A. and San Francisco simultaneously.
Brown Paper Tickets is proud to have been the Not-Just-for-Profit ticketing agent for Not a Genuine Black Man in both San Francisco and Los Angeles. With the lowest ticketing fees in the industry we keep prices down so events can thrive. This assures that they are accessible to more people and artists can keep more of the fruits of their labor. http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3124
We're proud to be able to say that we knew him way back. The show's next stop is Off Broadway at the DR2 Theatre in Manhattan's Union Square. Brian's memoir, based on the play, will be published by Hyperion Press and released nationwide on July 11. GENUINE is also in development for an HBO series.
