Composers Concert - April 22 Bainbridge Island Museum of Art
The JENNY DAVIS Jazz Quintet features: 2017 Earshot Jazz Instrumentalist of the year, flugelhornist, DMITRI MATHENY: 2017 Earshot Hall of Fame Golden Ear award recipient, Seattle jazz pianist; BILL ANSCHELL; Ted Enderle, bass; Robert Rushing, drums and for an evening of original compositions and arrangements. Benefiting, non-profi, youth-run LISTEN TO YOUR ART organization, bringing awareness to the LGBTQ community and suicide prevention.
Special guest, young composer, GWYNN LANNING, student at West Sound Academy will feature some songs from her latest album, along with fellow students, SPARKY DAVIS & IMANE BLISS. This is a celebration of young talent, and original music. Also, a special guest appearance by composer, VANESSA LITTRELL.
JENNY DAVIS, A Seattle native, earned her Bachelor of Music from the prestigious Cornish College of the Arts. A 20-year steward of straight-ahead jazz, she actively performs throughout the U.S. and Canada in clubs, festivals and jazz venues. A true original with an authentic sound, Jenny has that rare vocal ability to swing hard in the pocket and hold her own with the best musicians in the business. She is currently a vocal coach at Island Music Guild and working on her Masters of Jazz composition at Vermont College of Fine Arts. DMITRI MATHENY NW Instrumentalist of the year, Earshot Golden Ear award 2017, is acclaimed for his warm tone, soaring lyricism and masterful technique. American flugelhornist DMITRI MATHENY has been lauded as one of the most emotionally expressive improvisers of his generation (International Review of Music). An honors graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Dmitri Matheny vaulted onto the jazz scene in the 1990s as the protégé of jazz legend Art Farmer. Since then he has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal international following, touring extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, traveling to 19 countries. With over 100 recordings to his credit, Dmitri Matheny has released 11 albums as a leader. His latest is Jazz Noir, a fresh spin on crime jazz, film noir movie themes and timeless classics. The San Francisco Chronicle calls Matheny one of the jazz worlds most talented horn players.
BILL ANSCHELL, 2017 Earshot Hall of Fame Golden Ear award recipient, CDs have earned critical acclaim and widespread exposure, with several making Jazzweek's national "Top 50" chart for radio airplay. Anschell's 1998 release, a different note all together, was selected by United Press International (UPI) as one of the "10 Best" jazz releases of the year. His 2006 CD, More to the Ear than Meets the Eye, was chosen by numerous critics and radio stations across the country for their "10 Best of 2006" lists. His 2009 duo CD of spontaneous improvisations with saxophonist Brent Jensen was described by Cadence as "startlingly beautiful, surprising, and powerful...a transforming experience." And his 2011 solo piano release, Figments was called "magical" in Thomas Conrad's JazzTimes review.
QUINN LANNING is an 11th grade student at West Sound Academy in Poulsbo. They have been composing music for eight years and are currently study under Patrick Stoyanovich. Quinn is one of the original members of the arts and music festival Listen to Your Art. LGBT activism and awareness is one of the goals of Quinns music, as they strive to spread messages of compassion and discussion with their newest compositions. One of these pieces called Laces Tied to a Tree, focuses on several kinds of discrimination, including racism, homophobia, and religious persecution. Quinn wishes for all listeners to bring their own stories and reflect upon our society as a whole.
