Pluribus Fidibus plays Diversimodè Accordata: scordatura music of Heinrich Biber.
The ensemble Pluribus Fidibus (Carla Moore and David Wilson, violins, John Dornenburg, viola da gamba, and Yuko Tanaka, harpsichord) will perform a program called Diversimodè Accordata: scordatura music of Heinrich Biber. Scordatura is the technique of tuning a stringed instrument in a non-standard way. Doing this changes the sound of the instrument, the way its played, and sometimes changes what the instrument is capable of doing. Many composers over the centuries have employed scordatura as a way of exploring new possibilities, but none have done so to the extent or with the effect of seventeenth-century composer Heinrich Biber. Biber, one of the foremost violinists of his day, undertook a deep exploration of scordatura and produced a body of repertoire for scordatura violin of unparalleled power and beauty, a repertoire exemplified in his 1676 Rosary Sonatasa sonata for each of the 15 Mysteries of the Rosary, each in a different tuning of the violin. The program features two of these sonatas, The Visitation and The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin.
What could be more awesome than sonatas for scordatura violin and continuo? Why, trio sonatas for TWO scordatura violins and continuo, of course! In 1696 Biber published a volume titled Harmonia Artificioso - Ariosa Diversimodè accordata (Artificial Harmony: Pieces in Various Tunings), seven suites for two stringed instruments (five for two violins, one for violin and viola, one for two violas damore), each suite in a different tuning. Three of these suites will be performed on our program.
While other composers have tended to use scordatura as a trick or a gimmick, Bibers deep understanding of how the tunings affect the sound and capabilities of the instruments has produced a unique body of first-rate music, and Pluribus Fidibus (Many Strings) is delighted to share this music with you.
